Surgeons Talk About Post-Divorce Cosmetic Surgery

By September 9, 2011 No Comments

How common is plastic surgery after divorce? Is it a means of revenge or a way to reclaim your self-confidence?

This video from Fox Houston features Dr. Leopoldo Lapuerta, an ASPS plastic Surgeon who appears on the news to discuss the procedures that people get after divorce. He says typical surgeries include breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tuck and eyelid surgery.

Re-entering single life can be difficult. Especially divorced women, who are frequently denied the dignified label of “aging gracefully,” a cosmetic procedure may sound appealing. Even something as simple as Botox can provide the right boost to reenter single life.

In another recent news piece, ABC news spoke with Dr. Marina Peredo, a New York dermatologist who had cosmetic surgery after her divorce. She says a breakup can leave women feeling vulnerable, but choosing a cosmetic enhancement is really about being comfortable in your own skin and taking steps to improve yourself.

New York plastic surgeon Dr. Jon Turk estimates that a fifth of his clients are women who have just been divorced, and always advises these clients to take some time to cool down before opting into surgery. Patients who come in who are bitter or angry about their divorce and looking to use surgery to make their spouse jealous or to just fill some type of emotional void, those are the ones that I think we need to counsel really carefully.

Women who have recently undergone a divorce should always be careful and consider their own state of mind before opting for cosmetic procedures. This is especially the case with surgeries, which have long-lasting effects and may involve a few weeks of recovery.

With all the stress and frustration of disentangling one’s life and possessions from those of another, it’s vital that recently divorced women take stock of their needs and desires before considering cosmetic surgery.
