BOTOX FOR MIGRAINES IN SEATTLE AND TACOMA

Nearly everyone will have a migraine at some point in their life. Normally recognizable by the throbbing or pulsing pain on one side of the head (sometimes both), these intense headaches can leave you completely debilitated and unable to work or partake in your everyday activities. However, for some migraine sufferers, they experience 15 days a month where their life is impacted by migraines. This is known as chronic migraines. BOTOX–the famed cosmetic injection to reduce facial lines and wrinkles–has emerged as a leader in preventing migraines in chronic sufferers. This can dramatically improve their quality of life and help those with chronic migraines get back to their life. Seattle Plastic Surgery offers BOTOX for migraines to chronic migraine patients in Seattle and Tacoma.

HOW DOES BOTOX PREVENT MIGRAINES?

BOTOX is a type of injectable known as a neuromodulator. Neuromodulators disrupt the messages your brain sends to your muscles and, in the case of BOTOX for migraines, nerves. This does not stop their function, but rather, keeps the muscles relaxed and helps prevent overactivity of the muscles and nerves. This can significantly reduce the amount of headaches chronic migraine patients have in a month.

BOTOX is a form of botulinum toxin A, which is safe when injected in small doses over time. Cosmetically, it helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles, as well as, train the facial muscles so that new wrinkles are not formed. This is similar to how BOTOX for migraines works. BOTOX does not treat migraines, but works as a tool to prevent future migraines.

BOTOX can usually be used in conjunction with treatments such as painkillers or other prescribed medications. Some medications can cause negative interactions with BOTOX, so it is important to tell your provider all of the medications you take, not just those for migraines.

WHAT CAUSES CHRONIC MIGRAINES?

In the majority of cases of chronic migraines, there is usually no identifiable cause. There are certainly illnesses, medications, and other medical conditions that can cause someone to experience migraines for a short period of time, but chronic migraine sufferers have migraines 15 days a month for at least three months. Seattle BOTOX for migraines is only recommended for those with chronic migraines.

While no specific cause of chronic migraines is known, there are a number of factors that may worsen or bring on migraines in some people. These are known as triggers. Triggers range from lifestyle changes, the weather, hormones, and disruptions in sleep. Avoiding known triggers can help reduce the frequency of migraines, but not all migraines have triggers.

For most BOTOX for migraines patients in Seattle, there is no understood cause of their migraines, meaning that treating and preventing their headaches can seem nearly impossible. This is where BOTOX can come in. In clinical trials, BOTOX has shown to prevent on average 8-9 migraines a month in chronic sufferers. While BOTOX is not a treatment for migraines, preventing over half of the headaches experienced, can change and improve their quality of life.

WHERE DO THEY INJECT BOTOX FOR MIGRAINES IN SEATTLE?

When you come in for BOTOX for migraines, your cosmetic surgeon will specifically target the muscles and nerves of your head. The muscles and nerves are what cause pain during migraines, even if not the source of the headaches themselves. BOTOX blocks the pain messages sent from your brain.

Your plastic surgeon will specifically target the areas you experience pain during a migraine. They will cater the treatment to help you find the greatest benefit. During an average BOTOX for migraines treatment in Seattle, your plastic surgeon will target the forehead, head, and neck. They may target all or one of these areas depending upon the amount of units and your unique needs. Since TMJ is often comorbid with migraines, they may also administer Botox for TMJ.

The entire procedure should not take more than 15 or 20 minutes. Your plastic surgeon will carefully inject the BOTOX to minimize pain and side effects. You should feel little to no pain during treatment. Before you leave the Seattle Plastic Surgery office, your cosmetic surgeon will monitor you for a short time before allowing you to return to your daily routine.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY FOLLOWING BOTOX FOR MIGRAINES IN TACOMA?

BOTOX–whether done for cosmetic or medical reasons–is a safe and non-invasive procedure. This means that after receiving your Tacoma BOTOX for migraines, you can usually return to work or your normal activities after a short monitoring window following the injections. This is similar to any other injection treatment or vaccine.

Most BOTOX for migraines patients have no major side effects and continue on with their day immediately after treatment. However, like with any cosmetic procedure, it is important that you discuss your health and medical history with your plastic surgeon before treatment. Certain medical conditions or situations can compromise your results or put you at a higher risk of complications. Your cosmetic surgeon will ensure you are in good health and have a small chance of developing complications or harmful side effects.

Possible Side Effects:

BOTOX–like any medical treatment–has some minor side effects that you may see after BOTOX for migraines treatment. Many patients will experience no side effects whatsoever, but if you do, most side effects resolve on their own within a few days. Commonly reported side effects after BOTOX for migraines in Seattle and Tacoma include:

  • Neck pain
  • Swelling (usually around the injection site)
  • Pain at injection sites
  • Bruising
  • Headaches
  • Muscle pain

If you experience pain, icing it may keep you more comfortable until it subsides. Headaches and muscle pain are rarer side effects, but usually not a cause for concern. WHY CHOOSE BOTOX OVER OTHER MIGRAINE TREATMENTS?

BOTOX for migraines is a preventative treatment that aims to reduce the frequency of your chronic migraines. While you doctor may prescribe other medications to work concurrently with BOTOX, BOTOX works from the inside to help prevent painful and debilitating migraines.

Often, BOTOX is used with medications or other treatments meant to treat migraines as they happen. This can help further reduce the amount of migraines you experience in a given month, and treat the pain you feel during one.

Since BOTOX works to train your muscles to remain relaxed, this treatment can help lower your dependance on prescription painkillers and medications, as well as, the need for extensive future BOTOX for migraines treatments. There are no other comparable migraine prevention treatments that reduces the frequency of migraine symptoms.

It will take time for BOTOX to train your muscles. Usually, it takes at least two treatments of BOTOX for migraines for patients to begin seeing results. This varies between patients, so staying in contact with your Seattle plastic surgeon and working with them to forge the best plan of action will help you see the best outcome in preventing chronic migraines.

BOTOX is a simple procedure that has proven effective for preventing migraines in chronic sufferers. With little risk and few side effects, BOTOX is the perfect treatment for migraine prevention and relatively painless. In 2010, the FDA approved the use of BOTOX for migraines and helped thousands of patients find relief and gain their independence over debilitating chronic migraines.
