Taut Tummy: Full Tummy Tuck vs. Mini Tummy Tuck

By September 2, 2015 No Comments

Similar in name, many overlook the significant distinctions between a Full Abdominoplasty (Full Tummy Tuck) and a Mini Abdominoplasty (Mini Tummy Tuck). However, when considering a Tummy Tuck, it’s important to look at the finer details of the two procedures.

Where does the difference lie? Whereas a Full Tummy Tuck encompasses the entire stomach, a Mini Tummy Tuck focuses exclusively on the lower abdomen. Here, we highlight the major aspects and differences to help you better understand which Abdominoplasty is best for you.

How do the Two Differ?

The major difference between the two is how much of the tummy needs improvement. For those looking to remove smaller amounts of abdominal fat and skin in the lower tummy only, a Mini Tummy Tuck may suffice. However, if you have a larger amount of fat and skin both above and below the belly button that needs to be removed, a Full Tummy Tuck will most likely be necessary. A Full Tummy Tuck also allows access to address problems with the abdominal muscles, such as a separation from pregnancy, known as diastasis recti.

Full Abdominoplasty

  • Removes excess fat and skin

Performed under general anesthesia, Dr. Jonov will make an incision spanning from hip to hip, as well as an incision around the belly button. He is able to access both above and below the belly button. To help reduce the waistline, many patients opt to undergo liposuction. By eliminating excess fat, liposuction allows Dr. Jonov to better reshape the abdominal area.

Mini Abdominoplasty

  • Targets below the belly button
  • Removes and tightens skin to create a taut and defined stomach

Although a lesser procedure, a mini tummy tuck is also performed under general anesthesia and involves an incision similar to that for the full tummy tuck, but sometimes somewhat shorter placed near the pubic bone.  Howeverâ??there are cases where a mini tummy tuck is not enough:

Although a mini tummy tuck offers a quicker and easier alternative to undergoing a full tummy tuck, Dr. Jonov emphasizes the compromise: â??If you are only concerned about tightening the skin of the lower tummy below the belly button where it is overhanging, then you could just have a mini (or lower) tummy tuck.  However you will have no improvement or tightening of the upper tummy, and that includes the wrinkled skin that is hooding over the belly buttonâ?.
