Liposuction, or lipo, is a very popular body contouring procedure that can help remove stubborn areas of fat throughout the body. Lipo can be used to trim and sculpt a patient’s:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips/flanks (lovehandles)
  • Buttocks and thighs
  • Knees
  • Upper arms
  • Neck

Liposuction technology has continued to improve during the past decade with new methods, such as power-assisted lipoplasty (PAL), tumescent lipo, and super-wet lipo. These innovations to the procedure have helped provide more precise results and a shortened, easier recovery period. However, it is important to understand that liposuction is not an alternative to healthy dieting and regular exercise.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

Men and women at a healthy, stable weight who struggle with stubborn deposits of fat that cannot be lost with diet and exercise alone. Lipo may greatly benefit other patients who may be mildly overweight or have less-than-ideal skin tone. Dr. Jonov will speak with you to determine if liposuction is right for you, or if you would benefit more from other cosmetic surgery procedures. It is important that you are physically healthy in order to achieve your best, longest-lasting results. Older patients may benefit by supplementing their liposuction with procedures like a tummy tuck to also address skin laxity.

During your procedure, Dr. Jonov will make a tiny incision near your problem area and insert a narrow tube known as a cannula, which is attached to a vacuum. He will then move this cannula throughout the problem area, removing fat deposits to slim and contour your body’s shape.

Recovery following liposuction

Healing from your procedure and getting back to normal will take a little bit of time and patience. It is important to begin walking around as soon as you are able in order to reduce the risk of swelling in your legs. Within a week, you should feel
well enough to return to work. Any bruising or swelling will continue to fade over the next few months as your body continues to look better each day.
